Project Description
Rigging International’s contribution to FirstEnergy Nuclear Operation Company’s and Bechtel Power Corp.’s successful steam generator replacement project at Beaver Valley Power Station Unit One included:
■ Developing and executing a mooring and ballasting plan for the shipment barge that delivered the new replacement components.
■ Offloading and transporting a replacement reactor vessel closure head and three replacement steam generators, each weighing a maximum of 367 tons, to temporary storage locations.
■ Design and fabrication of a hydraulically operated reactor vessel closure head upending/downending cart and of miscellaneous heavy lifting and transport equipment.
■ Design, fabrication, supply, and erection of inside- and outside-containment lift systems and a runway system to support steam generator and reactor head handling.
■ Detail engineering and on-site engineering services to support all rigging and transportation activities. Services included detailed structural analysis, calculations, design drawings, clearance studies, installation procedures, and performance of site walkdowns and route surveys.
■ Load testing of haul routes and RI-supplied equipment.
Because of limited clearances and limitations of the in-containment polar crane, RI’s upending/downending cart was used, without crane assistance, for all manipulations of both the old and replacement reactor vessel closure heads with their attached shielding and CRDMs. Potential polar crane overload and clearance issues necessitated use of an RI-designed parallel semi-gantry for the handling of the old and replacement steam generators in containment.
