Transporting the second crane onto the barge

Project Description

When Rigging International's (RI) client, Penn Terminals, purchased two older STARPORTER container handling cranes, both cranes had to be removed from the dock in Jersey City, New Jersey, within approximately 45 days of purchase.

RI was contracted to help Penn Terminals meet this deadline. A 250-foot by 75-foot barge was chartered and surveyed, a ballasting scheme was devised and sea fastening was designed and fabricated. Using RI's 50-foot gage crane carrying system and a self-propelled, 36-line hydraulic platform trailer configuration, both cranes were transported onto the barge. In order to minimize disrupting operations at the Jersey City dock, the barge and cranes were moved to Bayonne, New Jersey, where the sea fastening was installed prior to the 40-hour, 240-nautical mile tow to Eddystone, Pennsylvania. Upon arrival at Eddystone, the cranes were offloaded using the same equipment and set on temporary rails in the backreach area. The loading of the cranes was completed in 25 days and the project, from mobilizing the Jersey City site to demobilizing the Eddystone site, was completed in 45 days.
