Project Description
As a result of the Loma Prieta earthquake, the upper level transition span between the box girder and cantilever sections of the bridge detached and fell onto the lower level, causing major damage and completely disabling the bridge in both directions.
CalTrans immediately called Rigging International to the scene in order to assess the damage and find a means to stabilize the damaged upper and lower sections. Once these first tasks were accomplished, Rigging International removed the damaged sections, designed a jacking system to realign the damaged areas of the bridge and then completed the repair and replacement of the spans.
