Project Description
Rigging International installed a four-span pedestrian bridge over the San Joaquin River near Manteca, California. The spans were of varying length and weight - the largest was 202 feet long, 13 feet wide and weighed 210,000 pounds.
The two end spans were set to abutments and piers using a crane on the bank of the river. To set the two center spans, a crane was rolled onto a barge, which required a complex ballasting procedure.
The two center bridge spans, which are completely over water, were delivered in five sections, were assembled on the barge, picked and rotated 90 degrees, and set back to the barge deck, which again required complex ballasting procedures to maintain the barge stability. The barge was floated into position through shallow waters; the assembled spans were lifed by the on-barge crane and set to concrete piers.
